AREA NEWS UPDATE April 2005
I would like to thank the Terrace Skating Club for hosting another
successful Kla How Ya competition. Thanks to the many volunteers who
made the week-end a memorable one for all the skaters. Awesome job!
I have the Kla How Ya /Nizutnee schedule for the next few years. I now
have a copy on my filing cabinet for quick reference!
2006 Kla How Ya - Prince Rupert
2007 Kla How Ya - Mt. Raine
2008 Kla How Ya - Kitimat
2009 Kla How Ya - Hazelton
2010 Nitzutnee - Houston
2011 Kla How Ya - Smithers
2012 Nitzutnee - Burns Lake
Please let me know if you are unable to host when scheduled. During a
meeting held at the Nechako Nizutnee, it was decided that we would name
the competition according to the club designation before the competition
was changed. The rotation was kept the same with the exception of clubs
now out of the West area. I would like input on the rotation order.
Would you
like to change it or leave it this way?
Congratulations to Kelsey Minhinnick!
She represented BC at the National Starskate Competition and placed 3rd
in the skills portion of the Gold Triathalon and 7th overall. Great job,
Kelsey!
Please make sure that delegate/proxy forms are send to Audrey Heffel
this week, for the BC Section AGM and ASAP for the National AGM. These
are great learning opportunities for clubs if they are able to send one
or two members of their executive. If someone in your club is attending,
please let me know.
Clubs are reminded to make sure awards candidates have been submitted.
We would love to post carnival pictures on the website.
Prince Rupert held a successful test day the end of March. They did an
awesome job of hosting and scheduling. Thank you to Lorraine Nelson
(Prince Rupert, test chair) for the great job she did with the
scheduling! Kitimat is hosting a test day at the end of their Spring
School. Please contact Marlene Goncalves Kitimat, test chair) for more
information.
I would like to thank all of the test chairs in our area for the awesome
job they do organizing test days. This is not an easy task at times and
we are reminded how critical it is for club executives and test chairs
to work together. Great job!
Prince Rupert is hosting Field Training in the fall, please keep the
beginning of October open. It will be packed with great sessions both on
and off the ice. These events are great team builders for our area and
great opportunities for all skaters.
Take care,

NEWSLETTER #3
2004-2005 SEASON
To all West Area Clubs,
November 24, 2004
Regionals is just around the corner. By now clubs will have received
meeting packages for the semi-annual meeting held on the Saturday night.
If your club is not attending regionals or the meeting, please make sure
proxies completed and sent to either myself (west area rep) or someone
you
have designated as your proxy.
All clubs are asked to donate an item to the silent auction held at the
competition. I will be working in the audit room, so you can drop items
off to me there or at the silent auction table. I am also looking for
volunteers to work at the table for short periods of time. Thanks.
The region has developed new forms for entering bids to host regional
competitions, high performance and field training. Please contact me for
the forms if you plan to bid for any of the above events. Regionals will
be decided at the December meeting in order to give clubs enough time to
plan and organize. Field training and high test day will be decided at
Kla How Ya. Please make sure you have secured ice with your bids.
The region is looking for skaters interested in becoming the athlete's rep
for the region. Please contact me for more details.
Please send back the survey forms ASAP. We are hoping to have the
information in time for the semi-annual meeting next month.
Is you club planning anything wild or interesting in the next couple of
months? Test Days, carnivals, fund raisers, etc. Please let me know.
I am working on my report for the general meeting, so if there is anything
you would like me to add, please let me know this week.
Thanks,
Take care.

NEWSLETTER #2
2004-2005 SEASON
Congratulations and thank you to Prince
Rupert for hosting the Field Training Event for the West Area.
Victor Kraatz and his wife Maikki were awesome moderators and inspired
all of us. Thanks to Sheri, Jennifer K, Barb, Darlene, Cindy and
Cathy for helping to make the weekend a memorable one for all those who
attended. We hope to have photos on the website in the near future.
If there is anyone not permitted to have
pictures or contact information on the website please let me know as
soon as possible. The region is recommending that a privacy waiver
be written into club registration in the future.
We are always looking for new information to
add to the CNCR website. All submissions must be sent to the area
rep first and the area rep will forward the submission to the CNCR
webmaster.
Please note that $5.00 per incorrectly
filled out test and competition entry form will be charged, the monies
to go to the home club.
Clubs will constitutions dated earlier than
1996 will be contacted and should receive a generic constitution.
Ray Hargraves is the BC Section office contact and expert on
constitutions. The club president is the only person who should be
in contact with him. Please consult with Ray, this is his area of
expertise. Society Act will supercede club constitutions.
The Society Act has been known to change frequently so please double
check to be sure.
Many clubs are registering too many members
of their executive. Only those with signing authority and access
to money need to be registered with Skate Canada. (president, past
president, competition, test, secretary, treasurer)
Skaters Lottery is now a sweepstakes.
Basically this means is that we will now be making a donation.
Sanctions insure skaters at special events
other than what they have registered for during the season.
Sanctions are needed for competitions, carnivals, galas and on ice
special events. We recommend that clubs submit a blanket sanction for
guest appearances that may occur over the season. PLEASE NOTE: No
more than 3 open sessions per season (Come skate with us, bring a buddy,
etc.); otherwise a sanction is needed.
CNCR is looking to compile information to
help new club executives. There will be more information coming.
*******CNCR IS LOOKING FOR AN ATHELETES
REP******************
If your club has someone who is interested
in this position, please have him/her contact me for more information.
Thanks
Clubs that have harnesses are asked to check
with the arena to make sure it has been properly installed. The
harness should pass inspection. Please keep the inspection papers on
file with your club.
Does your club prefer to have the BC SECTION
KNOW YOUR SPORT in September or leave it with the AGM in May?
Criminal records check: It is the
club’s responsibility to retain a copy of the criminal records check for
coaches. The is only renewed when a coach is moving to a new club.
Once again I recommend that you visit
the CNCR website. It is filled with information for all members of
the skating community.

NEWSLETTER #1
2004-2005 SEASON
Welcome back for another exciting season
of figure skating.
“Remember we are all volunteers and must
work together to provide a positive environment for our skaters and
membership. We are here to promote our sport and work together for
the betterment of our skaters.” I found this in the minutes of the
last region board meeting and feel it has a powerful message for all of
us.
Business items:
1. Please
send me your updated Form 100’s as soon as possible. We are
sending out the Caribooster and need to make sure everyone is included.
Thanks
2.
Applications for synchro and field training seminars must be
received no later than September 15th, 2004. At this
time Prince Rupert is planning a field training seminar for the first
weekend in October. Information will be sent to clubs as soon as
the details have been finalized. We are hoping to include a
mini Know Your Sport component for parents. If you have a topic
you wish covered, please contact me as soon as possible. Thanks
3. The
West Area is hosting the High Test Day in November. The host club
has not yet been confirmed. We will know for sure after the board
meeting in September.
4. I
am taking calendar orders for this season. Calendars are limited
and we sold out last year, so please get you orders in early. (At
this time I have an order from Hazelton.)
5. Club
Development Fee is due. Please send your club payment of
$50.00 to Sandra Leniuk (treasurer) or myself. This the old club
administration fee renamed.
6. Insurance
packages will be sent out to clubs this month. “It is
mandatory that you send a registration list with your remittance.
This will ensure that all skaters are insured. The premium for
insurance this year will be $1.85 per skater. Required forms
and payment are due no later than October 31, 2004.
7. Clubs
hosting events this year need to send sanction forms to Val Collins.
This includes competitions, carnivals and yearend events. Every
club should complete a blanket sanction that will cover them for any
exhibitions for the year. . The region will be charging a
$50.00 late fee if sanctions are not submitted at least 2 weeks prior to
the event.
8. REMINDER
- Clubs are responsible for taking EI and CPP off their employee
(coaches) cheques.
If you fail to do so it could result
in paying back these deductions when you are audited. Skating
clubs are being audited by Revenue
Canada.
-
Clubs must be paying a minimum two hours a day work.
9. Our CNCR website
is being updated. Please submit news items and pictures so they
can be
included on the West Area page.
(upcoming events, test days, seminars, fundraising events,
etc.) We would also like to
have all club website addresses so they can be linked to the region
site.
I was honoured to be able to attend the
National AGM in Calgary in June of this year. What a great
learning experience and awesome event. It was incredible to
see hundreds of people from across the country all working to make our
sport a more positive experience for kids. I was able to attend
several seminars and hope to share my information at the Prince Rupert
Field Training. Topics included Canskate. Starskate and the new
judging system.
I have learned how important it is for a
club to plan their seasons and work to build strong relationships with
other organizations in order to promote the sport of figure skating.
Clubs have to work hard to offer “something good, something
different, something worth the money and most of all, something for all
kids”.
I have brought back great ideas designed
to benefit all clubs, skaters and parents.
The highlight of the AGM for
me was the lunch with Elvis. He is truly a talented and
inspirational athlete. Wow!!!!!!!!
I will be attending the region board of
directors meeting on the 17th of this month.
If you have any questions or concerns,
please contact me at my email address or home phone number. (cpudsey53@hotmail.com)

I am looking forward to a great skating
season and hope to see or hear from you soon.
